The quest to find a missing boy takes a teenager on a dangerous journey to the emerald mines of Colombia.

Waiting For Natalie Dan Spanton 9781520367095 Books

A glaring inconsistency in The Rescue chapter. However other than that the story was wonderfully done with authentic dialogue and characterization. Entertaining, well paced, filled with beautiful imagery and raw details. I do highly recommend reading. I mention the inconsistency because often authors read reviews and I hope he does read and ask me. I'm willing to edit my review.

Waiting For Natalie Dan Spanton 9781520367095 Books Reviews

Natalie Bouchard is a typical teenage American girl goes to school, plays Lacrosse, and works at her Mom's resturant. But an incident that happened years ago keeps haunting Natalie from the murky past. It deals with the night her grandmother had a heart attack at the wheel, leaving she and her then, two year-old brother, Christopher, stranded in the car on a bridge, on a rainy night. A young Natalie walks off into then night to get help, temporarily leaving Christopher behind with their dead grandmother.
When Natalie returns, Christopher is gone, his coat and other belongings are found in the nearby river. The assumption is that he drowned. But something keeps taunting Natalie about that night. Something just wasn't right.
After learning of an incidnet that happened that night, years ago, Natalie comes to the conclusion that her brother, Christopher, was kidnapped and could still be out there somewhere. She begins a detailed search, one that leads her to the drug capital of the world, Bogota, Columbia.
She enlists the aid of her older friend, Caleb Ferguson, and instead of going on family trip with a friend, she ends up scouring the streets of Columbia in search of her brother.
This is where Dan Spanton takes us through a picture perfect and action packed search thorugh another part of the world with colorful descriptions, and intricately contrived settings, with characters that are alive and real the entire way through. "Natlaie's" characters are fresh, vibrant, some are good people, others are shady, and all wonderfully crafted.
Natalie searches an unfamiliar world for her brother through a series of disappointments, but with the help of Caleb and her uniquely characteristic ex-marine grandfather, who is a one and only grouch, but continually bends to his granddaughter's wishes. It is through the cast of brilliant characters that Natalie finds either help or danger, until ultimately, the final climactic ending we didn't expect creeps up on us and delivers a wonderfully crafted, heartfelt story.
Dan Spanton is an incredible author who takes through worlds we hadn't imagined in a book that will keep BOTH young adults and adults turning the page for more. The book is a must story for everyone!
While I'm not a sports fan, I was able to empathize with Natalie from page one. Her daydreams of renown and other similar aged characters--brought back my own study hall days of longing for something to happen, to make a difference in my world, especially of the heroic variety. It's been a while since I liked a heroine as much as I liked Natalie. She was rational, reasonable, thoughtful, passionate and courageous the way I dreamed of being at 17 and usually was not.

I also could easily imagine the other characters Marcelo, Jenna, Sylvie, and Caleb. Marcelo was personable without being too noble; he was realistic and also flawed, especially in his subplot of loving a girl who he can't bring himself to contact after she accidentally sustained a terrible injury. I also like his passions for vampires. J Caleb was the wonderful tough guy hero with a heart of gold. Complete with a cigarette, leather jacket, and motorcycle, his willingness to follow Natalie to Bogota to protect her got me sighing. The others listed above (girls) were friends of Natalie, and didn't have a lot to do with the plot other than to offer her support with advice and steadfast friendship, which they did perfectly.

The plot is dreadful, to put it simply Natalie's 2-yr old younger brother was kidnapped from a car when Natalie went for help to aid her unconscious grandmother who had a stroke at the wheel. He was taken by an unstable criminal back to Columbia, and endured everything from beatings to being dumped at an orphanage by his presumed relative as soon as the woman who kidnapped him ended up back in jail...and that is only the beginning. Natalie's quest to find him in Columbia kept me on the edge of my seat. Reminiscent of the kidnapped girl in the miniseries Human Trafficking, this story can't help be emotional and tug at the reader's heartstrings as they turn page after page eager to see if Christopher is going to be rescued from a fate he clearly didn't deserve.

Riveting story aside, the book's other attributes were also stellar. It had almost no typos I found. The editing was very well done, the dialogue realistic and to the point, the descriptions enough to visualize the scenes without getting bogged down in lengthy passages. This book was also informative. I live in the NE US, and had never heard of Goat Cheese day, something I'll have to remedy. I--like Natalie--thought of Columbia as warm and tropical. The reality that it could be cold in places because of altitude was a sharp reality I hadn't considered. The various descriptions of the various places/settings in the country simultaneously made me want to visit and make me scared to ever really go there.

Overall opinion This book was a perfect example of YA, in that it was easy to read and follow without being simplistic, yet still addressed tough issues, kept me on the edge of my seat and made me teary. Try this author. I'm very glad I did!
